Worship

"Everybody has something that they’re completely ten fingers/ten toes devoted to. And that is your god in principle, something that you give all of yourself to. Human beings are hardwired to be completely devoted to something." Mos Def

Sunday is not when we go to church, but when the church goes to worship. This "going" to worship is a central rhythm of our community life as we seek to be the church together. Worship invites us to step into God's Story to remember that we're part of something bigger than ourselves.

When And Where?

Our weekly worship gathering takes place on Sundays at 10:30 Map_footer.jpga.m. at the Ursuline Academy Performing Arts Center (Directions). In addition to street parking, there is a parking lot next to the building. You'll see our "City Church Gathers Here" sign at the entrance of the lot as you approach from North Van Buren Street.

What's It Like?

When you arrive, you'll be welcomed by a greeter and given a worship bulletin. The environment is informal, and the dress style is casual. As you're waiting for the service to begin, help yourself to coffee or to any of the resources on the table in the lobby. This is a time for people to hang out and enjoy community.

The worship bulletin is a handy resource that walks us through the service. The order of worship is designed to tell God's Story by moving us through the episodes of the biblical story: Creation, Fall, Redemption, and Renewal. The goal in all of this is for us to experience the power and beauty of the gospel and to be renewed in our faith.

A typical service includes singing, prayer, confession, an offering, the reading and teaching of Scripture, and the Lord's Supper (communion). We strive to make what we do in worship comprehensible to everyone, regardless of church background. This means that we do our best to avoid "insider" langauge and to give a rationale for what we do. Children's ministry is provided during the sermon.

Our musical style is eclectic, meaning that we aim for a sound that is born out of the diversity of our lives. Here are some of the songs we do:
